Begun in 1917 and completed in 1919, it was the first of eight campus buildings designed according to the new Carsley-Gilbert master plan, which inspired ordered expansion of the University. Architects McIver, Cohagen, and Marshall of Billings chose the Renaissance Revival style thus setting the standard for the remaining Carsley-Gilbert plan buildings added between 1922 and 1927. In 1977, the facility was renamed the Botany Building in honor of its sole remaining occupant.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"Public","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/20813bab-709f-4f3e-a723-150e7c0dbd3f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read about the University of Montana Historic District</a>","<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/36b2236f-1a00-41f0-b8f2-e9474c588162/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">See photos of the University of Montana Historic District</a>"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://mail.historicmt.org/files/fullsize/e37affaf318dc31ab7cc6b93c17de757.jpg":{"id":3150,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Natural Science Building","description":"Natural Science Building.
