Decorative pediments above the windows, clapboard siding, cornerboards, and flat vergeboards characterize this style. Popular before the Civil War, frequent use of Greek Revival on the Western frontier was a throw-back to that earlier period. Sawn lumber and glass transported overland by freight wagon were expensive commodities, and their use reflects the wealth of first owner Elmer F. Johnson. Owned by the Moritz family between 1888 and 1934, the home represents elegance on the early frontier.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"Private","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/22389964-91bd-4c66-917f-0279004a042e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read about Virginia City National Historic Landmark District</a>","<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/e0b9251f-b92e-4e8e-ae20-c0bc3cec7394/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">See photos of Virginia City National Historic Landmark District</a>"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://mail.historicmt.org/files/fullsize/818cdb290e4b18c076b2caa2709e59db.jpg":{"id":2318,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Moritz House (Alderline-Hancock House), Virginia City","description":"View looking south at building side elevation and facade | Courtesy of Montana Heritage Commission | Oct 2019 | Kate Steeley, Montana Heritage Commission","thumbnail":"https://mail.historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/818cdb290e4b18c076b2caa2709e59db.jpg"}}}
