Its original dirt-covered pole roof predates the first saw mills; the roof was later covered over with sawn boards. The interior illustrates the once-common use of muslin stretched over logs to imitate a smooth plastered wall. Early occupants were blacksmiths, and during the 1880s and 1890s Julius and Frederick Kramer operated a saddlery here. Living quarters were located in the rear, a common arrangement in mining camps and frontier towns.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"Private","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/22389964-91bd-4c66-917f-0279004a042e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read about Virginia City National Historic Landmark District</a>","<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/e0b9251f-b92e-4e8e-ae20-c0bc3cec7394/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">See photos of Virginia City National Historic Landmark District</a>"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://mail.historicmt.org/files/fullsize/3db39626303ee92b988505067879dbcc.jpg":{"id":2434,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Kramer Dress Shop, Virginia City","description":"View looking north at building facade, Wallace Street. | Courtesy of Montana Heritage Commission | Oct 2019 | Kate Steeley, Montana Heritage Commission","thumbnail":"https://mail.historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/3db39626303ee92b988505067879dbcc.jpg"},"https://mail.historicmt.org/files/fullsize/79e65ad6bec8cf33242ca18d224dde14.jpg":{"id":124,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Kramer Building (Dress Shop)","description":"Still image capture of the Kramer building at 323 West Wallace, Virginia City, Montana.
