The estimated cost amounted to $1,250. Within a few months, Andrew J. Davis, the president of Butte&#039;s First National Bank, purchased the property as an investment for $2,000. In its early years, the home hosted a steady stream of working-class families. As Butte’s population grew exponentially, the residence changed hands often, and new owners remodeled it to meet Butte’s changing economy. By 1916, the owner had divided the building into two, three-room apartments, and later in the 1920s, remodeled it again, adding a storefront addition. In 1927, Joseph and Nora Thivridge owned the building. They lived in the rear with their three children and Nora operated a grocery in the street-facing storefront. Joseph was head wringerman at the Independent Laundry and later became a house painter. The family moved on in 1931 after Joseph died following an appendicitis surgery. The building remained a grocery store/apartment into the 1970s.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"private","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/GetAsset/b2694698-4c33-4e3d-b1f9-d8b8740bf6dc/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more about the Butte Historic District.</a>"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://mail.historicmt.org/files/fullsize/6881f49f0d462fb380b2fe1f593f3c5a.jpg":{"id":6279,"mime-type":"image/png","title":"238 S.
